What is the list?

BAVS is a Yahoo! Group dedicated to beginning adult violinists. The vast majority of the list's membership are people who began playing the violin as adults, people who played the violin as children but quit and eventually came back to it as adults, and teachers with an interest in adult beginners. The BAVS membership includes both classical violinists, as well as fiddlers from a variety of traditions.

The BAVS members are generally very supportive of one another, and politeness and a positive outlook are the norm for the list discussions.

Discussions span a wide range of topics. Members often post problems in hopes that someone can help them solve them -- or at least commiserate. Questions about technique, instruments and equipment, teachers, and repertoire are particularly commonplace. Members often share personal experiences in their journey to learn to play the instrument.

How do I subscribe or unsubscribe myself?

You can read this list online via the Web, or you can receive list messages through email. Subscriptions are controlled through the BAVS home page. To gain access to the group, you need to become a member; follow the links under the "Membership" area of the screen, on the upper right-hand portion of the page. You will be taken through a sign-up process that allows you select whether you want to get email, or read the messages via the Web. The procedure for unsubscribing yourself is the same.

How do I read or search past discussions?

This list is fully archived, but only members can view the message archive. In the archive, just above the list of messages, there is an input box with a button next to it labeled "Search Archive". You can enter a word or words into the input box, and click on the button, to get a list of relevant messages.

You are strongly encouraged to read the archives if you have a specific question. BAVS is a fairly repetitive list; people do ask the same questions over and over again. Though each time, there are new and interesting responses, there is definitely value to be gained by also looking through the archives for past responses to the same question.

Where can I upload or download related files?

There is a Files section on the BAVS home page. To download a file, simply click on the link for it.

To upload a file, look at the list of folders in the Files section, click on the link for the appropriate one, and then click the "Add File" link.

Please do not upload things to the files area unless they aren't available elsewhere on the Web. If you are sharing personal files, particularly those of a temporary nature, please strongly consider putting them on your own personal website; if you don't have one, you can get one free from Geocities.

If you want, you can upload sound files of your playing, but you should delete them yourself after a month. The moderator may delete them for you, but would appreciate your cleaning up after yourself.

Please upload MP3s rather than WAVs, if you can. MP3s are a lot smaller, and the group has limited file storage space. Programs like Musicmatch Jukebox will covert other file types to MP3.

Please respect the hierarchy of folders that have been set up, and upload files into the appropriate folder. For instance, please ensure that sound files go into the Audio folder.
