In the year of Our Lord, 2010, the conflict between the nations of the
world finally reached the final point of crisis. A war which had begun
with the conventional machines of war quickly escalated, at the hands of
a few madmen, into Armageddon. Fire and death rained from the sky, and
those who did not die in the initial conflagrations succumbed later, to
disease, to radiation, to starvation. But there were some who prevailed...
The Origin of Fire is a roleplaying game campaign set in the
dark days of a post-apocalyptic Earth. The campaign traces the rebirth
of civilization, through the eyes of the descendants of a handful of
survivors. The structures of the Aria Roleplaying game,
particularly the concept of the Monomyth and the emphasis upon Interactive
Histories, as well as the world and culture generation of Aria
Worlds, will form the core of the campaign, but
Harnmaster 2nd Edition rules will be used as the actual
mechanics for character creation, skill use, combat, and so forth.

We, the Chosen, had foreseen these dark days over a decade before, and
had been preparing. We devoted a part of our lives to creating the
place you know as home, the research station we named Haven. We were
the most brilliant, the most gifted, the most visionary of our
generation. When the war began, we were ready. When it became
apparent that the madness would not stop, we retreated to this place,
deep beneath the polar icecap of the frozen Arctic.
We are, together with you, our children, the only remains of what was
once a great civilization. We leave it to you to preserve what you can,
against the new Dark Ages which are to come.
The three decades we have prevailed are a tribute to the resilience of
mankind. But now, the Plague threatens to render even us extinct. We
do not doubt that we will find a cure. But for now, we will place you,
our last hope, into the oblivion of cold sleep, to preserve you from
this most deadly of viruses. We do not anticipate that you will be
within this state of suspended animation for long, and we cannot guess
at what the long-term side-effects might be. Our best wishes, and our
prayers, go with you. You are our last hope.

This is now just a thought experiment. Once upon a time, participants
were sought for a bi-weekly or monthly face-to-face campaign, with
supplementary character interaction on-line. Spectators were also
welcome; if you were so inclined, you were welcome to submit an idea
for one or more of the original colonists, or roleplay one of the
cultures via email.
