Officer Training

The PPA offers officer training to its own mates, and mates in other crews who have been recommended by their captain, regardless of flag affiliation. Mates from outside the PPA who are training with us may elect to do so as an alt.

The minimum requirements to enter the OiT program, if you're from another crew, are detailed below. (OiTs from the PPA follow the normal PPA promotion path.)

From another crew in Rudder Revolution:

  • Your captain's permission and recommendation.
  • Solid, or Broad/Master, in both Sailing and Carpentry, plus Narrow in Bilging, or equivalent indication of experience with the game.
  • Apprentice in Gunnery.
  • Neophyte in Navigation, and comfortable doing this puzzle while paying attention to your chat window.

From an outside crew:

  • Your captain's permission and recommendation.
  • Duty puzzle standings reflecting both experience and reasonable competence at the puzzles.
  • Exposure to Gunnery and Navigation is strongly recommended.

Officer training is divided into three components: theory, supervised practice, and unsupervised command. We aim to make sure that you have everything you need to become an excellent officer, including developing your skills at command, pillaging, and trading, ensuring you have a thorough knowledge of the game's mechanics, and trying to help you become an effective, ethical leader. While you are an officer trainee, you will also be expected to help train our cabin persons and pirates. All officers in training must adhere to our officer policies.

For theory, a PPA instructor will explain the different facets of command; he'll talk you through the mechanics of commanding a ship, and explain the theory of how everything works. He'll work with you one-on-one to make sure that your questions are answered before you ever take a ship out.

Then, as an officer with the title of Midshipman in the PPA, you'll take out ships under the supervision of the instructor. You'll command the voyage, but the instructor will help you out if you have any questions and provide feedback on your performance.

When the instructors feel that you have gained the necessary degree of competence, you will be promoted to the title of Navigator, and allowed to take out ships without an instructor present. PPA instructors will still often sail with you, and provide feedback and guidance.

When you feel that you're ready, you'll take our graduation test, designed to test if you can competently handle a ship under adverse circumstances. Once you pass, you'll likely move on to another crew as an officer, or start your own crew; you may also ask our Captain if you can stay on as an instructor.
