A Quick Note On Latin

Useful Latin words for Ars Magica. Definitions taken from The New College Latin/English Dictionary.

Should one want to be excessively detail-oriented:

Please note that some of these words are also defined in the glossary at the back of Order of Hermes. There are two contradictions: the plural of consors is given as consortis, and the plural of sodalis is also given as sodalis. Both of these words are third-declension i-stems; the forms given in Order of Hermes are thus one possible form for their plural accusatives. The forms given below are all nominative (and the plurals are also correct for the accusative).

o Concilium
The name of the Covenant. The Latin word itself means, "private meeting; council; union; association; deliberation, debate".
o consors (pl. consortes)
Partner; brother. Used to denote non-magus members of the Covenant (usually used to refer to the Companions).
o custos (pl. custodes)
Guard; guardian; watchman; protector; sentinel. In the plural, garrison. custos corporis, bodyguard. Used to denote the Grogs.
o dominus (pl. domini)
Owner, proprietor; master, ruler, lord; commander; (courtesy title) Sir
o magister (pl. magistri)
Chief, master, director; teacher; adviser; guardian
o sodalis (pl. sodales)
Companion, fellow; member (of a society). Used by magi in the Order of Hermes as a general term for other magi in the Order.
