Bill on Invitation

Well, I read the posts, and then let it all distill for awhile. What came out of that discussion was a resolve to make Aegis more clear and the Parma a bit more effective in protecting _all_ of the magus, and not just his physical body. I may take a little hint from the old Broken Covenant of Calebais and allow for some sort of way that a magus who helped create an Aegis to allow someone inside it without harm (the old "invited across the threshold" routine).

I agree 100%. If you're looking for suggestions, here's one:

Add a sidebar on "Invitation" and how it applies to all the magics of protection. For instance, by performing a small ritual of invitation, a mage may permit another mage to penetrate his Parma while still keeping it up to others. Or, how magi who participated in the ritual of the Aegis can perform a small ritual of invitation to allow another mage/magical being past the Aegis, dropping its effects on them and allowing them to cross the threshold of the protection. Only the caster of the protective magic can Invite entities in, as they are the ones tied to the magic, so no faerie or other entity may be invited and then invite in return. This Rule of Invitation (Not really a Law of Magic) applies to Rings, Circle, Signs, etc. of Protection. For every spell of protection, there is necessarily an invitation. My favorite is the classic "Enter freely, and of your own will."

One note about Invitation: It is not reversible. You cannot invite someone past your protective magic and then "disinvite" them. Once you have invited someone in, the protection will not work against them again until you recast it. Now, this implies that if you drop your parma to a mage, it will not protect you against that magus until you take fifteen minutes and redo it. We might not like this bit. But I'm sticking to the paradigm here, that you can't invite them in, and then throw them out right after.

Anyway, this is just a small piece on Protectives. Give me a day, and I'll finish up the article on Protective Magics in ArM.
